Undergraduate Disability Studies Program at University of Winnipeg Promising

Dr. Michelle Owen, Department of Sociology faculty member and Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Disability Studies at the University of Winnipeg, reports that members of the Ad Hoc Committee are encouraged by progress in their efforts to instigate an undergraduate program in Disability Studies at their university. Overtures to the University were initiated by the CCDS a number of years ago, but only recently under Dr. Owen’s leadership have concrete steps finally been taken toward this goal.

In the last year, the Sociology Department has agreed to house the program as proposed by the Committee - with congratulations from the Curriculum Planning Committee for a great proposal. The Sociology Department has accordingly forwarded a letter of intent to the University Faculty Council of Arts and Science. Remaining hurdles include a funding agreement through the Council on Post Secondary Education and approval by the University Senate.

The CCDS has a vested interest in the success of this venture, and as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, shares Dr. Owen’s cautious optimism that the target date of Fall 2007 will be met!
