In 2015–2016, Canadian Centre on Disability Studies (CCDS) partnered with Inclusion Winnipeg to seek funding for the research and development phase of the tentatively named “Emergency Card Project”. The aim of this Project is to design a communication tool that can be used by persons with communication challenges in emergency situations when they are interacting with first responders and community members. With the use of the communication tool, it is anticipated that positive interactions between persons with communication challenges and first responders will be increased.
The first year of this Project, the development phase, was completed in early 2017. Project activities included a literature review and environmental scan, interviews and surveys with stakeholders and preliminary program development. The CCDS and Inclusion Winnipeg plan to continue collaboration and implement the Project in Winnipeg in the next Phase of their work, with hopes of further implementation throughout Manitoba and interested communities across Canada.
